Damage to Divergent Thinking

This video is visually enticing to view and speaks on how our education system lowers divergent thinking and creates a population of uninspired individuals.

I found it specifically touched home at the start when it stated how a degree is not a "guarantee" anymore. This is entirely true today as opposed to years ago. A degree alone satisfies little to no promise of employment or desirability in the work force.

It also touches on economic versus intellectual models of education that benefit some people, but not the majority. I felt like this was in direct relation to sociology of education because we are then looking at the hierarchical aspects of society and how that is intertwined with our ability to achieve and learn.

The most interesting part of this video in my opinion was when ADHD was spoken of - society makes an "excuse" for children by presenting the "ADHD of the classroom" when in most cases students are just bored because their education is by no means engaging and inhibits focus as opposed to these students all having a medical condition.

I found this video displayed the similarity of school and factory lines predominately when ringing bells, line ups, and age; "date of manufacture" were noted as the key aspects of current education systems. This standardized system does not cater to special needs as well as it should and is a concrete example of how the paradigm needs to shift surrounding education to one that is more beneficial to all students instead of just some. Creativity needs to be influenced, problem-posing education needs to be more apparent, and special need to be better catered to in order to support divergent thinking.
